Picture this:

It’s the dead of night, and a stranger’s cough suddenly shatters the silence. The catch? You’re home alone, and the sound is coming directly from your nightstand. This eerie phenomenon is the latest security scare circulating on TikTok, leaving iPhone users wondering if their devices are listening—or worse.

If you’re like millions of Americans who need white noise to fall asleep at night, take notice that hackers are buying YouTube ads to target you. The sleep hygiene demographic is big. While YouTube doesn’t disclose official numbers for people who listen to white noise for sleep, data from third-party surveys, channel analytics, and view counts estimate the sleep hygiene demographic at around tens of millions.

You may want to rethink using your iPhone for white noise at night after hearing this story.

4 a.m. Tapping

A TikTok user, v22Salazar, who usually falls asleep to YouTube, woke up to a man staring at her through her iPhone. She was jolted awake by the sound of a microphone on her device around 4 a.m.

The man the young woman saw on her screen was sitting in a computer chair, watching her. She could tell that he was using dual monitors. When she noticed him looking back and forth between the two monitors, she knew that this was really happening.

When she touched the screen on her iPhone, the screen lit up. However, she noticed that the man on her iPhone could cloak himself by dimming the screen. He appeared ‘pixelated,’ but she could still see him.

The Passcode Trap

Remembering a warning from another woman who faced the same nightmare, v22Salazar realized the man’s goal. He was making faint tapping sounds, a calculated move to trick her into a sleepy, reflexive routine: entering her passcode.

She played along, pretending to go back to sleep so he would reveal himself again. When he did, the reality set in—he had total control of her device.

Her only solace was that she had never stored her banking information on the device, leaving the hacker unable to access her wallet even if she had entered her passcode.

Understanding the Entry Point

Awareness is your first line of defense. Attacks often involve manipulating the target. For example, you might see a banner promising “Ad-Free Black Screen Rain Sounds.” That sounds perfect for someone who needs help falling asleep. Clicking the banner ad triggers a prompt that asks you to ‘allow’ a browser notification or download a separate app to continue. Treat this request as a signal to close the tab; staying within the official YouTube app is the simplest way to keep your device secure.

By recognizing that legitimate YouTube content will never ask you to install anything, you can stop a security breach before it starts. Being mindful of the links in video descriptions is another powerful habit. However, even the most cautious users benefit from a safety net.

The “Multi-Layer” Approach

So, what else can you do to secure your device? While your habits keep you alert, technology provides the muscle.

The first step is keeping your iPhone updated to the latest iOS. Installing the latest software is a critical defense because it patches the very vulnerabilities hackers try to exploit. Currently, Apple is no longer offering security-only updates for those staying on older versions, making the jump to the latest iOS release essential.

However, software updates should not be your only line of defense. Strong antivirus software is critical. Antivirus software adds another layer of protection by scanning malicious links, blocking risky websites, and alerting you to suspicious activity before it’s too late.

iPhone and iPad Models At the Highest Risk

Apple says the following devices are affected if they are not updated:

iPhone 11 and later

iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd generation and later

YouTube TV

It is no secret that you can save money by cutting the cord, a.k.a. getting rid of your cable or satellite TV. One of the biggest reasons most people don’t do it sooner is because they don’t want to give up their local news channels. You don’t have to. Not with switching to YouTube TV!

YouTube TV offers local news stations such as ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX and has become a popular choice for cord-cutters.

The first couple of things required to get up and running with YouTube TV are a fast Internet connection and a monthly subscription to YouTube TV.

1. Internet Connection

YouTube TV requires a connection of at least 3 Mbps for viewing your favorite TV shows at standard definition (SD). That’s the minimum needed. With more people staying at home these days, more people in your household are relying on the internet for work, online education, and entertainment. Have a family of six? 3 Mbps isn’t going to be enough for everyone in your home. If you can get gig speeds, why not get it? That way, everyone in your family can stay connected.

2. Cost

YouTube TV costs $82.99 per month for the Base Plan, which includes over 100 channels. New customers may be eligible for a promotional rate of $59.99 per month for the first two months. Add-ons like the Spanish Plan ($14.99/month) and 4K Plus ($9.99/month) can increase the total cost.

3. Channel Lineup

Channel lineup is probably the most important factor you’ll take into consideration when switching.

YouTube TV’s channel lineup rivals its competitors for its sports networks. You can get channels like ESPN, Fox Sports 1 & 2, Big Ten Network, CBS Sports Network, MLB Network, NBCSN, SEC Network, and NBA TV. YouTube TV added the NFL Network to its base plan back in September of last year.

With a YouTube TV subscription, you’ll get 85+ of the top channels in entertainment, news, live sports, & more, plus unlimited DVR storage for recording your favorite shows.

4. How to Activate It

To activate your YouTube TV subscription, follow a few simple steps. First, if you haven’t already, sign up for a YouTube TV membership on a web browser by visiting the official website. Once your account is created, you will be prompted to sign in with your Google account. If you don’t have a Google account, use the link below to sign up. Next, download the YouTube TV app on your preferred streaming device, such as a smart TV, Roku, Apple TV, or gaming console. When you open the app, a unique activation code will appear on the screen. On a separate device (like your phone or computer), go to tv.youtube.com/start, sign in to your Google account, and enter the code displayed on your TV. This will link your device to your YouTube TV account, and you’ll be ready to start watching.

Strategies of online safety

Parents and caregivers play a crucial role in safeguarding children online. Here are some key strategies:

Open Communication: Talk to your children regularly about their online activities. Encourage them to come to you with any concerns or uncomfortable experiences.

Establish Clear Rules and Guidelines: Set clear rules about internet usage, including time limits, acceptable websites, and appropriate online behavior. Discuss the consequences of breaking these rules.

Utilize Parental Controls: Use parental control software like Advanced WiFi+IQ to filter content, restrict access to certain websites, and monitor online activity.

Supervise Online Activity: Especially for younger children, supervise their online activity to ensure they are safe and following some established guidelines. As children get older, gradually give them more independence, but maintain open communication and trust.

Teach Privacy Awareness: Emphasize the importance of protecting personal information. Teach children not to share their name, address, phone number, school name, or other identifying information online without your permission.

Educate about Cyberbullying: Talk to your children about what cyberbullying is and how to respond to it. Encourage them to report any instances of cyberbullying they witness or experience.

Promote Critical Thinking: Teach children to evaluate online information critically. Help them understand that not everything they see online is true.

Set a Good Example: Model responsible online behavior yourself. Be mindful of your own screen time and the information you share online.

Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date on the latest online safety threats and best practices. Utilize online resources and workshops to enhance your knowledge.

Empowering Children

Children also need to be empowered to protect themselves online. Teach them:

To think before they click: Encourage them to be cautious about clicking on links or downloading files from unknown sources.

To protect their passwords: Teach them not to share their passwords with anyone, except for a trusted adult.

To be kind and respectful online: Emphasize the importance of treating others with respect and kindness in online interactions.

To report anything that makes them uncomfortable: Encourage them to come to you or another trusted adult if they encounter anything online that makes them feel uneasy or scared.

Collaboration is key

Uncover the fascinating journey of Wi-Fi technology, from its humble beginnings to the lightning-fast speeds of Wi-Fi 6, and see how it revolutionized our wireless world.

All Wi-Fi devices, including routers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, smart TVs, and other smart home devices, use 802.11 wireless standards to connect to the Internet.

Wi-Fi operates at 2.4 GHz or 5GHz and transmits data using radio waves. Your Wi-Fi router changes these waves based on the data sent using protocols. These Wi-Fi protocols are known as ‘IEEE 802.11

The term Wi-Fi stands for IEEE 802.11. However, the Wi-Fi Alliance, a non-profit organization with the Wi-Fi trademark, sought a more user-friendly term. The Wi-Fi Alliance hired Interbrand, a brand consulting agency, to develop a trademark to promote IEEE 802.11 technology.

Interbrand knew that calling high-speed wireless networks’ IEEE 802.11′ would not work. The name had to be memorable and roll off the tongue. The idea came from another widely accepted concept, high fidelity. High fidelity is the reproduction of sound with a degree of faithfulness to the original. The trademark ‘Wi-Fi’ was born.

Since adopting the term Wi-Fi in 1999, IEEE 802.11 has continued to evolve. Older versions of 802.11 include 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. Devices using 802.11a, b, or g take more time to communicate. These versions are known as the slow talkers.

Version b (Wi-Fi 1), released in early 2000, led to the adoption of Wi-Fi.

802.11b devices, in particular, transmit much more slowly. Version b conversations take up the airwaves and force modern, faster devices to wait longer for a break to communicate. Wi-Fi has much faster speeds since version b.

Older devices (version b) that use Wi-Fi 1 technology need an interpreter – their way of transmitting data is much slower, at 11 Mbps. Compared to Wi-Fi 6, which transfers data at 10-12 Gbps, it’s like putting a tortoise in a race against a cheetah.

The next time you experience slow internet speeds, it could be due to an older ‘b’ device trying to talk to your router.

Why Internet Speed Matters for 4K

To stream 4K content smoothly, you need sufficient bandwidth. Here’s why:

Higher Resolution: 4K content has four times the resolution of 1080p HD, requiring more data to transmit.

Higher Bitrate:To maintain 4K quality, the video bitrate, or data rate, is significantly higher.

Multiple Streams: If you have multiple devices streaming 4K content simultaneously, the demand on your internet connection increases.

Recommended Internet Speed for 4K Streaming

For optimal 4K streaming, aim for an internet speed of 25 Mbps or higher. This will allow you to stream high-quality 4K content without buffering or lag. However, for a truly seamless experience, especially if you’re streaming multiple 4K devices or engaging in other online activities, a speed of 35-50 Mbps is recommended.

Choose a Reliable Internet Provider: Select a provider that offers high-speed plans and has a good reputation for service quality.

Use a Wired Connection: If possible, connect your 4K streaming device directly to your router using an Ethernet cable. This provides a more stable and faster connection than Wi-Fi.

Upgrade Your Wi-Fi Router: A powerful Wi-Fi router can help ensure strong and consistent Wi-Fi signals throughout your home.

Close Unused Apps: Close unnecessary apps and browser tabs to free up bandwidth.

Adjust Video Quality Settings: Most streaming services allow you to adjust the video quality settings. If you’re experiencing buffering, try lowering the quality to 1080p or 720p. By following these tips and ensuring you have a fast and reliable internet connection, you can fully enjoy the breathtaking visuals and immersive sound of 4K TV.
