Picture this:

It’s the dead of night, and a stranger’s cough suddenly shatters the silence. The catch? You’re home alone, and the sound is coming directly from your nightstand. This eerie phenomenon is the latest security scare circulating on TikTok, leaving iPhone users wondering if their devices are listening—or worse.

If you’re like millions of Americans who need white noise to fall asleep at night, take notice that hackers are buying YouTube ads to target you. The sleep hygiene demographic is big. While YouTube doesn’t disclose official numbers for people who listen to white noise for sleep, data from third-party surveys, channel analytics, and view counts estimate the sleep hygiene demographic at around tens of millions.

You may want to rethink using your iPhone for white noise at night after hearing this story.

4 a.m. Tapping

A TikTok user, v22Salazar, who usually falls asleep to YouTube, woke up to a man staring at her through her iPhone. She was jolted awake by the sound of a microphone on her device around 4 a.m.

The man the young woman saw on her screen was sitting in a computer chair, watching her. She could tell that he was using dual monitors. When she noticed him looking back and forth between the two monitors, she knew that this was really happening.

When she touched the screen on her iPhone, the screen lit up. However, she noticed that the man on her iPhone could cloak himself by dimming the screen. He appeared ‘pixelated,’ but she could still see him.

The Passcode Trap

Remembering a warning from another woman who faced the same nightmare, v22Salazar realized the man’s goal. He was making faint tapping sounds, a calculated move to trick her into a sleepy, reflexive routine: entering her passcode.

She played along, pretending to go back to sleep so he would reveal himself again. When he did, the reality set in—he had total control of her device.

Her only solace was that she had never stored her banking information on the device, leaving the hacker unable to access her wallet even if she had entered her passcode.

Understanding the Entry Point

Awareness is your first line of defense. Attacks often involve manipulating the target. For example, you might see a banner promising “Ad-Free Black Screen Rain Sounds.” That sounds perfect for someone who needs help falling asleep. Clicking the banner ad triggers a prompt that asks you to ‘allow’ a browser notification or download a separate app to continue. Treat this request as a signal to close the tab; staying within the official YouTube app is the simplest way to keep your device secure.

By recognizing that legitimate YouTube content will never ask you to install anything, you can stop a security breach before it starts. Being mindful of the links in video descriptions is another powerful habit. However, even the most cautious users benefit from a safety net.

The “Multi-Layer” Approach

So, what else can you do to secure your device? While your habits keep you alert, technology provides the muscle.

The first step is keeping your iPhone updated to the latest iOS. Installing the latest software is a critical defense because it patches the very vulnerabilities hackers try to exploit. Currently, Apple is no longer offering security-only updates for those staying on older versions, making the jump to the latest iOS release essential.

How Do Your Older Devices Affect Your Internet Speed?

The idea came from another widely accepted concept, high fidelity. High fidelity is the reproduction of sound with a degree of faithfulness to the original. The trademark ‘Wi-Fi’ was born.

Since adopting the term Wi-Fi in 1999, IEEE 802.11 has continued to evolve. Older versions of 802.11 include 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. Devices using 802.11a, b, or g take more time to communicate. These versions are known as the slow talkers.

Version b (Wi-Fi 1), released in early 2000, led to the adoption of Wi-Fi.

802.11b devices, in particular, transmit much more slowly. Version b conversations take up the airwaves and force modern, faster devices to wait longer for a break to communicate. Wi-Fi has much faster speeds since version b.

Older devices (version b) that use Wi-Fi 1 technology need an interpreter – their way of transmitting data is much slower, at 11 Mbps. Compared to Wi-Fi 6, which transfers data at 10-12 Gbps, it’s like putting a tortoise in a race against a cheetah.

The next time you experience slow internet speeds, it could be due to an older ‘b’ device trying to talk to your router.

Nemont’s 75th Annual Meeting: Record Turnout and New Leadership

Scobey, MT – Nemont’s 75th Annual Meeting of Members was a huge success, drawing 580 attendees, including 392 qualified members and 187 registered guests. We were thrilled to see such a strong turnout from our communities.

As a token of our appreciation, every attending member received a $75 bill credit and was entered into a drawing for a brand-new 2024 Wolverine X2 850 R-Spec Side-by-Side. Plus, we held a special kids’ drawing for a Sony PlayStation 5 Pro!

Board of Directors Elections: New and Familiar Faces

A crucial part of our annual meeting is the election of Board of Directors. Like other community-focused organizations, telecommunications cooperatives such as Nemont rely on a dedicated board with leadership roles like President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer. Our board also includes Directors representing specific districts within our service territory, each playing a vital role in guiding Nemont.

Adam Carney and Matt Stentoft faced off in District 1, with Matt Stentoft winning the director position. We sincerely thank Adam Carney for his six years of dedicated service on Nemont’s board. We’re excited to welcome Matt to the board; his experience as an Active Guard Reservist and a business owner (Silver Star Insurance in Scobey) will be invaluable. Nemont is truly fortunate to have local business owners contributing their expertise to our board.

For District 2, Tracy O’Connor of Poplar successfully retained his position on Nemont’s board after facing off against Matthew Gordon. Tracy has been a vital part of Nemont’s Board of Directors for nearly ten years and currently serves as our Chairman. Congratulations, Tracy, on your continued leadership!

Finally, Gail Fast from District 3 ran unopposed and will remain on Nemont’s board. Gail brings a unique and highly valued perspective, drawing on her experience as a local farmer/rancher and her twelve years as a Nemont employee. Her deep understanding of our day-to-day operations is a tremendous asset. Congratulations, Gail!

Leadership Transition: A Fond Farewell and a Warm Welcome

During the meeting, CEO Mike Kilgore announced his plans to retire after an incredible 20 years of service to Nemont. Mike’s dedication has been instrumental in Nemont’s growth and success. We wish him all the best for his future endeavors and much-deserved time with Betsy and the kids.

We’re also excited to announce that Josh Jensen, our former Human Resources Manager, will transition into the CEO position by December 1st. Mike will officially step down as CEO on November 30th. Congratulations, Josh, on this new role!

Nemont Board Election: Meet the Candidates

Members of the Nemont Telephone Cooperative service area will have the opportunity to participate in the cooperative’s governance at the upcoming Annual Membership Meeting on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, held at the Nemont Gold Garage in Scobey. A key item on the agenda will be the election of Directors to the Nemont Board. This year, five dedicated individuals are vying for these important positions, representing District 1, District 2, and District 3. Get to know the candidates below.

ADAM CARNEY (DISTRICT 1)

As a fifth-generation farmer from Daniels County, my roots run deep in the north Peerless Coal Creek community where I grew up. After graduating from Scobey High School, I pursued a Business Management degree at the University of Montana. Now, my wife and I cultivate a diverse range of small grain crops and pulses right here on our farm.

My involvement in agriculture has extended beyond our fields. I’ve had the privilege of serving as a Director for the Montana Wheat and Barley Committee and as a member of the Northern Crop Institute Board. As a business owner myself, I understand firsthand the critical role that communication and connectivity play in today’s world. I’ve always been driven by a passion to address the unmet needs within our frontier communities.

Since becoming a father, my motivation to see Nemont flourish for the next generation in rural Montana has only grown stronger. For the past six years, I’ve been honored to serve on the Nemont Board of Directors. My mission is clear: to ensure that cell phone and internet services remain reliable throughout Northeastern Montana. I am deeply committed to bringing progress through positive changes, all with the goal of securing a profitable and sustainable future for Nemont.

MATT STENTOFF (DISTRICT 1)

I was born and raised in Scobey. After graduating from High school in ’99, I attended Dickinson State University, where I met my wonderful wife, Melinda. While attending DSU, I joined the Montana Army National Guard (MTARNG) in 2001. I took a semester off to attend training, and before I could complete my degree, I was mobilized to Fort Bliss, TX in 2004. While on that mobilization, a job opening came up in Culbertson, MT to work full time for the MTARNG. I was selected for the job, and we moved to Culbertson upon my return from Ft. Bliss. I worked as an Active Guard Reservist for eight years and completed my bachelor’s degree online. In 2012, my unit was deployed to Afghanistan, and upon my return, I was looking for something closer to home to help on my family’s farm South of Scobey. The opportunity to buy an insurance agency (Lekvold and Associates in Scobey) came up, and we were able to return home. We moved back in 2014 with four kids (Addison, Aydan, Ava, and Arayah) and had one more (Alea) in 2018.

My priorities are God, Family, work, and hobbies. My hobbies include following my kids to their activities, helping on the farm, and being part of the MT Honor Guard, VFW, and American Legion. I cherish our small communities and want to do as much as possible to maintain the rural Montana way of life. I feel like CO OPs like Nemont are a big part of that, and I would like to do what I can to ensure it, along with all of the other businesses in NE MT, thrives.

TRACY O’CONNOR (DISTRICT 2)

Hello everyone! With all of the talk on the history of Nemont, I have taken a few moments to reflect on my time there. It’s hard for me to believe that I have been a board member for almost 10 years and Board Chair for three years. As they say, time flies when you’re having fun!

Thanks to the Members and Staff of Nemont, I have had an amazing opportunity to meet and work with great people in our footprint and around the country. It has been an amazing time to be a part of the Nemont family; it has been a fast-paced handful of years with many large projects that staff and management have completed and others that are being pushed across the finish line.

I have spent most of my life living in eastern Montana and am committed to serving our neighborhoods and way of life. I graciously serve on Nemont’s board with pride and with the members/owners’ best interest in mind.

MATTHEW GORDON (DISTRICT 2)

My name is Matthew Gordon. I’ve lived in Poplar, MT, since 2009 with my wife and four children. I have worked for the Fort Peck Tribes since 2012. I love all things technology and believe that the Internet is the most important tool I have at my disposal. I am constantly learning more about wireless technology and firmly believe it is the future technology to connect everyone. I have a strong understanding of computers and other portable electronics such as phones and tablets. I have a bachelor’s degree in Social Work and understand how to work with people no matter what level of understanding they have. I believe that education on how to use technology and electronic devices is very important, and everyone should have access to that knowledge. I would like to create programs to educate people on how to use technology. I would be willing to work for the people to make Internet access affordable for everyone.

GAIL FAST (DISTRICT 3)

My husband, Ryan, and I operate the family farm, raising wheat, peas, and lentils. Our family resides 5 miles north of Glasgow. Together, we have six children: Colten, Mo, Roman Fast, Abby, John, and Ethan Engstrom. I was born in Glasgow (to Gilbert & Marilyn DeSonia), raised in Nashua, and graduated from Nashua. I chose to stay in our community, working several jobs before starting my 12-year career with Nemont in 1999. I am forever grateful for the opportunities, education, and experience given to me during those years. In 2011, I chose to stay home to raise my three children and help on our family farm/ranch.

I am heavily invested in our community and enjoy contributing and giving back wherever I can. I volunteer on the Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. I serve as a representative for District 3 on the Nemont Board of Directors.

My excitement and passion for what we do as a co-op, not only for our members but all our communities, goes without saying. Now more than ever, wireless devices and high-speed Internet are crucial to everyday life. We are connecting the middle of nowhere to everywhere. I wholeheartedly believe in Nemont, its employees, members, values, and services. Nemont’s accomplishments result from hard work, dedication, direction, and teamwork. Thank you to the employees, cooperative members, and fellow board members for their role in our continued success. I am incredibly grateful and appreciative for the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors; it is an honor and a privilege. I am proud to be a part of the story.

For every qualifying mobile phone sold at our sales events, we donated $100 to local fire departments, empowering our customers to support their community in a meaningful way.

Throughout the county fairs, customers had the unique opportunity to choose from 23 community and rural fire departments to receive the donation funds. This initiative not only allowed us to offer quality mobile services but also to give back to the brave men and women who serve our communities.
